These Paws Were Made for Flockin’
When 5-month-young Sparky, a fun-loving and very active flat-coated retriever/border
collie mix, was transferred from a Bay Area animal services shelter to the East
Bay SPCA, he quickly grabbed their hearts. But Sparky had a very strong herding
instinct, and finding just the right home for this wanna-be cowdog took some time.
In fact, Sparky spent the remainder of his puppy months under their care.
They say that there’s someone for everyone, and that was the case for Sparky. Seven
months after checking into the East Bay SPCA’s placement program, Sparky was made
an offer that he couldn’t refuse. It turned out that Dale, from Crow Canyon Country
Club in Danville, CA was searching for a special someone to join his family and
his ground-keeping team at the office; one that was fast on his feet and had a strong
fondness for herding…in this case, geese! They knew they had the perfect candidate
to fill the job.
These days, Sparky starts his days at 5am, riding alongside his co-workers in the
company golf cart and skillfully (and gleefully) managing his very own flock. As
the work day winds down in mid-afternoon, Sparky hangs out at the Pro Shop, greeting
guests and graciously accepting praises and endless attention. Dale tells us his
very happy with the newest member of the crew. “I am so pleased with Sparky and
all of the members love (him). He has such an awesome personality.” Sparky’s sweet
personality has even won over the family cat, “Lion King,” who has become Sparky’s
playmate.
When the day ends and he drifts off to sleep, we have a feeling that Sparky can’t
wait until the dawn of a new day.
